Kicks Over Brunch Recap: Richmond, VA Edition!

Kicks Over Brunch Recap: Richmond, VA Edition!

Women’s History Month has certainly been one to remember, and what better way to round it out than by shouting out Melissa Chanel and the ladies of Kicks and Fros for bringing Kicks Over Brunch to Richmond, VA!

If you are tuned in with Kicks and Fros on Instagram (@kicksandfros) then you know that celebrating black women and kick culture is the name of the game. Sneaker culture runs strong here in RVA, especially amongst the ladies. However, being a smaller city, it is rare that we have brands come through and throw events the same way that they would in a major metro area. The sneaker community here is small but tight-knit so we have definitely seen the events that Kicks and Fros has thrown, and we wanted in! Typically we have to travel to attend such events until Melissa decided to bless us with our very own Kicks Over Brunch experience in the heart of Richmond.

In the weeks leading up to brunch, the anticipation was real! The number one question being “What am I going to wear?!” Well let me tell you, the ladies showed up and showed out. Richmond style is eclectic and it showed. We’re a college town, with lots of transplants from other cities. It’s always fascinating to see how my fellow sneaker enthusiasts incorporate their favorite sneakers into their looks. As you can see from the photos, the looks were bold and there were some grails in the building.

The team made an excellent choice selecting Bar Solita as the event venue. The restaurant's atmosphere is already amazing, but the brunch crew took the decor over the top. Balloon arches, custom champagne flutes, kick cam mirrors, and Cantu / Kicks and Fros sponsored gift bags set the scene for a fun afternoon. We had a chance to sip and chat before being seated at the family style table for bomb food and fun conversation.

Melissa kicked us off by introducing herself and having us do the same. While many of us already knew each other, it was great to meet new folks in my own city. The best part of the intros was hearing how everyone became interested in sneakers and sneaker culture. Almost everyone had a different path and a different connection to the culture, which was fascinating to hear. Breaking the ice with such a dope conversation starter made it even easier to mingle over brunch and free flowing mimosas. We wrapped up our conversation with games, custom sneaker cookies, and many thanks to the Kicks and Fros team for inviting us to such a special affair.

…and of course we lingered to take even more pictures. I mean, did the event even happen if you didn’t flick it up for the ‘gram? Check out the #kicksoverbrunch hashtag on Instagram to see even more photos from the event. While you’re there, don’t forget to follow for kickspiration and updates on the latest Kicks and Fros merch
